Design in recession times

Some people say that the new year 2009 will be under the sign of recession. Companies are cutting costs, people lose their jobs, life gets harder. This generates the question: What characteristics should have a design to survive a recession? Should it have greater flexibility, uniqueness or be more reasonable, meaningful and valuable?

We still have to design according to the user's needs and adapt to their changing requirements. Users have always been the driving force behind innovation on the web. I don't expect this to change.
